What is the Coinbase Premium Index?

The live percentage gap between an asset’s spot price on Coinbase (the primary U.S.-regulated on-ramp) and Binance (the largest global exchange by volume). A positive premium means Coinbase is trading above Binance right now; a negative premium (sometimes called a discount) means Coinbase is trading below it.

Why does the spread matter?

Coinbase’s order book skews toward U.S. institutional and retail flow, while Binance’s skews toward global/offshore flow. A sustained positive premium is a rough read on relatively stronger U.S. buying pressure; a sustained discount suggests relatively weaker U.S. demand or heavier offshore selling. It is descriptive, not predictive — the spread can and does flip sign within hours.

How large is the premium normally?

Under normal conditions the spread is small — typically a few basis points to a few tenths of a percent — since arbitrageurs trade it back toward parity quickly. Wider, sustained premiums or discounts (beyond roughly ±0.15%) are less common and worth noting, though they say nothing about where price goes next.

Is this a trading signal?

No — it describes the current price relationship between two exchanges, not a forecast or a recommendation to trade the spread. Real-world arbitrage execution (transfer time, fees, slippage) is not modeled here. Treat it as descriptive context, not advice.
