Bitcoin Mempool FAQ
What is the Bitcoin mempool?
The Bitcoin mempool (memory pool) is a holding area for unconfirmed transactions. When you send BTC, your transaction waits in the mempool until miners include it in a block. A larger mempool signals network congestion and higher fee competition.
How are Bitcoin transaction fees calculated?
Bitcoin fees are priced in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). An average transaction is roughly 250 virtual bytes. Multiply your fee rate by 250 to get total satoshis — e.g. 10 sat/vB × 250 vB = 2,500 sat.
When are Bitcoin fees cheapest?
Fees are lowest when the mempool is "Clear" (under 5 MB of pending transactions). Weekend mornings UTC typically see lower congestion. Monitor this dashboard's congestion badge before sending.
What does a positive difficulty adjustment mean?
A positive difficulty adjustment means blocks were mined faster than the 10-minute target, so the network raises difficulty to compensate. It signals growing miner participation and rising hashrate — generally a bullish indicator of network health.
