Balanced — Neutral Positioning — What It Means

Longs and shorts are near equilibrium (45–55%). Positioning data is not providing a clear directional signal. Systematic traders rely on price structure and other indicators rather than positioning bias in this zone.

Positioning data is informational and observational only. Long/short ratios do not predict price direction or timing. Always apply independent risk management.

What is the Long/Short Ratio?

The long/short ratio measures the percentage of BTC perpetual futures accounts that are positioned long versus short at any given moment. A ratio above 50% means more accounts are long than short; below 50% means shorts dominate.

All Accounts (globalLongShortAccountRatio) covers every Binance futures account with an open position. Top Traders (topLongShortPositionRatio) isolates the largest 20% of accounts by margin — often considered a proxy for "smart money" positioning. Divergences between the two can be informative.

When the crowd is heavily one-sided — either crowded long or crowded short — the risk of a squeeze (forced liquidations pushing price sharply against the crowded side) increases. This tool tracks that positioning in real time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Bitcoin long/short ratio?
The long/short ratio measures what percentage of open Bitcoin perpetual futures positions are held long versus short at a given moment, derived from exchange account data. A reading above 50% means more accounts are positioned long than short; below 50% means shorts dominate. It describes current crowd positioning in derivatives markets and is not a forecast of where price is headed next.
What is the difference between all-account and top-trader long/short ratios?
The all-account ratio covers every futures account with an open position, weighting each account equally regardless of size. The top-trader ratio isolates only the largest accounts by margin, often treated as a rough proxy for larger participants’ positioning. When the two diverge — the crowd leaning one way while top traders lean the other — it can point to a difference in conviction between retail-sized and larger accounts, though the divergence itself is descriptive and not predictive.
What does a crowded long or crowded short reading mean for squeeze risk?
When a large majority of accounts are positioned on one side of the market, that crowding has historically raised the odds of a liquidation-driven squeeze pushing price sharply against the crowded side, because many similarly-leveraged accounts can be forced out together. This is a structural observation about crowded leverage. It does not indicate when a squeeze might occur, and crowded positioning can persist for extended periods without one.
Where does this long/short ratio data come from?
Liquid State reads long/short positioning directly from Binance’s public futures API, covering both the all-account and top-trader ratios on 4-hour intervals over a 30-day lookback. It is republished free with no account required, for educational and market-monitoring purposes rather than as trading advice.
